One of my favorite old-school sayings is “suit up and show up”. For generations this saying was more than theory; it was actually practiced, expected. “Not wanting to” was never taken into consideration. No matter what task was asked of you, you were expected to complete it with all your energy and might. It’s kind of like an athletic event, if the players don’t suit up and show up there’s no game.
Isn’t the same true of life?
If people don’t get up in the morning ready and equipped for whatever the day may hold, not much will be accomplished. If folks show up without the proper skills and attitude the day may be a total loss. Just like a football player showing up without his cleats. We can’t imagine a responsible player making such an amateurish mistake, but many days are lost because folks are unprepared.
It’s really all about a little self-discipline and forward thinking. When my boys were small we were in the habit of preparing their backpacks and deciding what they were going to wear the next day before going to bed. It’s a good habit for all of us to be prepared the night before. It only takes a few minutes but can make a major difference when it’s time to leave in the morning.
Have you ever noticed that the people who show up late are usually unprepared? Their life seems to be out of control in a lot of areas. Perhaps if they could take care of the details, get those “ducks in a row” before the moment of truth; they could bring some order and, hopefully, a sense of peace to their lives.
So each day work on suiting up and showing up for success. Whether it’s being in class or going to work most successes are born of being on time and prepared. When we watch people succeed in their endeavors, it’s easy to see that they always come prepared and ready. Those who succeed don’t rely on excuses. They pay attention to the details and keep their nose to the grindstone.
While it may mean getting up ten minutes earlier or going to bed ten minutes later being prepared can make all the difference in how the day goes. So don’t forget; to achieve success we must suit up and show up.
